How to optimize your YouTube video to generate traffic

Once you have made your video, the next step is to make sure that you can generate traffic. This means being found in YouTube searches.
We need to optimize our video by using Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
In this article, and associated video, we will outline 5 strategies we can adopt to drive targeted traffic to our video.
Although there are billions of web sites and videos by adopting the right strategies we can be found high in the YouTube searches.
Here are the 5 strategies we recommend :
1 Compose an outstanding video title
This is the first thing viewers will see so we need to make it appealing so that viewers click on our video.
It is best to keep the title to less than 10 words and 100 characters.
People do not read more than 9 words in the search, so it is important to keep it short.
Actions and numbers work well, e.g.
“How to Gain Massive Leads in Three Days”
You should also include a benefit and use words like new, secret, best, etc.
“Discover the new way to lose weight in 14 days”
As well as a benefit it is advisable that the video solves a problem, e.g. losing weight, earning money to pay off debts, etc.
Insert keywords. Words like best and secret are found to be used a lot in searches, and have been proven to generate more clicks.

2 Compelling Descriptions
This is frequently overlooked by many people.
It is important because these words are the ones found by search engines.
The first 3 lines are important as these are the ones seen by viewers on YouTube.
Repeat your keyword phrase in the first line.
On your second line include your link to the service or product you are promoting. If your link is www.mysite.com/howtoloseweight you should include the full http, http://mysite.com/howtoloseweight
The reason is that the link is clickable when you include http.
You want to make it easy for people who will be happy to click a link but will be unlikely to copy and paste if you only include www
3 Tags
These are very important and are equivalent to keywords in searches such as google.
You are allowed up to 500 characters, so use as many as possible.
4 Video Thumbnail
You should include text within your thumbnail.
I have made another video showing how you can design your own thumbnail using www.canva.com
5 Call To Action
At the end of the video have a call to action.
This may be to click on your link or subscribe to your channel.

Please watch the video below and look out for my next video in this series.

How to start a YouTube channel for your business

By now, we should all know the benefits of having a presence on YouTube.
These include:

1 People prefer to watch a video these days, rather than read a lot of text.
When people want to learn about a new product or service, as many as 98% said they preferred to watch a video.

2 Video can increase your sales
It is estimated that adding a product video to your landing page can increase your conversions by 80%.

3 Videos are more appealing to mobile users
We have all seen the growth of mobile usage over the last few years and it is forecast that this growth will continue.
More than half of video viewing is now done on mobile phones.
It is also forecast that watching videos on mobiles will overtake traditional TV viewing.
Quite simply, people find it easy to watch a video while on the go, than scrolling through trying to read lots of text.

4 YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, so it is well worth having a presence.

Now that we have covered the benefits, let’s discuss what a YouTube channel is.
You may have lots of interests with videos on subjects such as golf, photography, dog breeding, etc.
If a golfer is looking on your YouTube account, he/she may not wish to look through your videos on photography and dog breeding.
To overcome this, we would have separate channels for each of our interests.
If you are looking for viewers, it is estimated that YouTube visitors are watching around 6 billion hours of video every month.
You only need a small part of that to have a viable business.

In order to customize your YouTube channel, you need the following :
1 Channel icon- this should either be a photo of yourself or your brand.
2 Channel art-personally, I use a site called www.canva.com, which is free and enables you to design your own channel art.
I have made a separate video to show how this is done.
There is a link below.
3 Channel description-this tells your viewers all about your channel.

That is basically how you set up your YouTube channel.
For further details, please refer to the video below.
In addition, I will be adding further videos on YouTube marketing.

How to get traffic to your site using blogger

I have written a number of articles and made some videos on the theme “how to get traffic to your web site”.
Some people rely on SEO and posting to sites such as Facebook and twitter.
If we take the subject of SEO, it takes a lot of work and skill to get onto the front pages of the search engines. For most people, this is a step too far so we need to look at other ways of driving traffic.
It is well worth posting to Facebook and twitter but there are other sites that we should consider.
One of these is Blogger, which is owned by google.
There are various debates about Blogger v WordPress.
Personally I don’t see it as an either/or as I use both.
If you have taken the time to write an article and possibly make a video the easy bit is to post to a number of different sites.
It doesn’t take much time to post manually to Blogger but if you want to make life easier, there are various bits of software as well as WordPress plugins that will let you post automatically to Blogger.
The benefits of using Blogger are as follows :

1 It is easy to use,but if you need to know how to do something a simple search on Google or YouTube will provide you with the necessary information.

2 It is free
This is a huge benefit if you are on a budget.

3 Free hosting from Google
As well as free hosting, you get 99.999% uptime.
Also, your site will not suffer degradation of performance.

4 Posts can be posted to Google +
As Blogger and Google + are both owned by Google you may have an advantage when trying to rank in the search engines.

5 You show up in the search engines faster
Blogger sites are added to the Google search engine within 24 hours, which gives you a huge advantage over other sites.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Blogger is well worth using.
I have used both Blogger and WordPress and I like both. However, at times WordPress can be more difficult to use than Blogger.
If you post to Blogger and Google + and make a video and post to YouTube, you may have an unfair advantage in the search engines as all of these are owned by Google.

I have made a short video as an introduction to Blogger.

How to generate more traffic using StumbleUpon

Another way of generating more traffic to your web site is to use
If you have not used this site before, it is regarded as one of the top social media sites for driving traffic to your web sites.
Like many of these sites, you need to create an account which is free.
Here are the steps to take :

1 Create an account
In the top right hand corner you can “Join For Free”.
Alternatively, you can sign in with your Facebook account.

2 Set up your profile
This is similar to other social media sites.
The most important step is to add your profile photo.

3 Add your interests
You will see lots of interests or you can search for your own interests.
Once you have your interests, you will see the number of people following those interests.

4 Connect to other accounts
Within your account you can connect to your other accounts :
Facebook
Google +
Twitter
This is well worth doing

As with most social media sites it is a matter of sharing and engagement.
In order to become more visible, there are a number of things that you can do.

5 Follow people in your niche(s)
Build this up gradually. You may find lots of good content among these people.

6 Like Pages
As you see articles that you like, give the thumbs up

7 Make Comments
If you see an article that you like, add a meaningful comment.
If it is interesting, other people will click on your link.

8 Add the stumble upon button to your browser
Go to
and follow the instructions
This will enable you to like blog posts that you see

9 Add the stumble button to your web site.
This will let other people share your content
According to this article
BrightEdge Technologies found a dramatic increase in content sharing when this button was added to a web site.

In conclusion, posting to StumbleUpon should help for 2 main reasons :

1 It is a high ranking social media site,so the more articles you post on there the more the search engines will like your site.
2 You can attract visitors from the site itself.
Once you have selected your interests, your followers and those you are following are targeted.

This may seem like a lot of work, but it should bring it’s rewards in the long-term. In the short term, if you want to gain an advantage, the best thing to do is to post your article automatically onto StumbleUpon.
There are a number of plug ins that will do this for you.
If you type into the search engine something like :
“wordpress plug ins to auto post to stumble upon”
You will find a number of solutions.
Make sure that you do the necessary due diligence on these plug ins.

The factors I consider are :
1 The number of downloads-you want to make sure, this has been downloaded more than a few times.
2 It has good reviews-look for 5 star ratings.
3 Recently updated -if the plug in has not been updated for several months or years, this is not a good sign.

Although there are lots of plug ins one that is quite popular is SNAP (Social Networks Auto Poster) from NextScripts, which will allow you to post to many different social media sites automatically from your WordPress site.

As usual, if you have any questions or comments, please contact me.

Posting to LinkedIn

When we have written a post, most of the time we are looking to drive traffic to our site and most people rely on being found on the search engines.
However, this is risky for 2 main reasons:

1 It is very difficult to get onto the front page of the search engines for any search term. As an example, if you are involved in weight loss ,typing:
“how to lose weight” will show you have 13 million competitors
The front page will be dominated by suppliers with big budgets.
You can improve matters by looking into niche markets within the main market.
However, there is still likely to be a lot of competition.

2 The search engines can change their algorithms without notice.
Many people have been on the front page of the search engines earning a good living and literally overnight, they are no longer on the front page and are not earning any money.

It’s time for a re-think.
If we cannot attract people to our web site, then we need to go where they are.
By this we mean that when we have posted an article, we also post it on other sites where our potential viewers are.
There are lots of such sites so rather than post on lots, it is worth concentrating on the larger social media sites.
Writing the article takes time, but posting to a few of these sites doesn’t take much time. There is software as well as WordPress plugins that will automate this process, but I have made a video showing how to do this manually.
The first site is LinkedIn which has mainly been used by professional people and for recruiting.
However, it has now been taken over by FaceBook and is undergoing some changes. It is one of the largest social media sites in the world, so it is well worth posting onto.

Below is a video showing how easy it is to do.
One thing I would recommend is, once the article has been written, to ping it.
This is easy to do with a site like  www.pingomatic.com

If you have any comments or feedback, please let me know.

YouTube description-the reason it is so important

When posting a video to YouTube, the description is so important.
After all,YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, so to be found in the search engines, we need to include a meaningful description.
Here are the things I suggest :

1 Firstly decide on your keywords.
This is a whole subject in itself, but let’s assume you have decided on
“How to make money online”

2 Include it in your title
However, it is better to make it more appealing, for example:
“How to make money online-learn the secrets never revealed before”
Or
“How to make money online-7 simple steps for you to follow”

3 I repeat the title as my first line of the description.

4 Include your URL in the second line including http.
For example, mine is
The reason you want to do it this way is that the format above is a clickable link.
You do not want your viewers to have to copy and paste the URL, because most of them will not do it.

5 Write your description
Ideally this should be between 200 and 500 words.
The important thing is that you should write the description for the viewer NOT for the search engines.
When writing, keep the sentences short.
Use paragraphs with only 2-3 sentences per paragraph.
Your viewers will not read a full page of text with no breaks.
Use bullet points-these make the reading more interesting.
Try to include your keyword phrase 3-4 times in the description, but do not overdo it as it may appear unnatural to the search engines.

6 Include your other social media links
If you are on sites like Facebook, Twitter , LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+ or any other of the major sites, you can show the viewer that you are active on other sites.

7 Include an external link
There are various thoughts on this, but it is something I normally do.
I normally include a link at the bottom of my description.
I go to google and type in the keyword phrase or something similar.
When I see the results I normally include a Wikipedia URL as this is a higher authority site.

I hope you find this useful, and if you have any suggestions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
